Thursday’s Taree card is all about managing a Soft 7 with the rail in the True, where the ground can feel gluey and momentum is harder to sustain. That usually turns races into positioning battles — not always leader-dominated, but you don’t want to be giving away cheap lengths at the start or circling wide on the bend. With so many events mapped with genuine enough tempo and plenty wanting the first half, the winners should be the ones who can hold a spot, travel, and then punch through the soft late.

2 ERNIEGY

Tactical races like this come down to nerve and timing, and that’s exactly how 2. ERNIEGY has been asked to race in his last two without quite getting the prize. He’s been runner-up at Gunnedah over 1300m when he was only nabbed late by Satin Dragon, then went to Beaumont over 1350m on a Soft 6 and again found one better behind Warbreccan, beaten just over a length after settling sixth at the 800. The platform is there. The horse is sound. Gate 12 is the sting. It forces the issue. Lou Mary’s gelding doesn’t want to be snagged out the back giving away start and track position on a Soft 7; he needs to be ridden with intent early enough to tack on and then save ground when the pressure comes. He stays 1400m and he’s already proven he can quicken through wet ground. This is the right maiden. Hard to beat.

Dangers & Value

1. COURSE OF ACTION is the obvious danger off one run at Scone over this trip, closing off strongly enough in a $40k maiden on a Soft 5 and maps to get a softer time than the wide-drawn pick. 9. MOON TREATY draws to be in the mix and in these even-run 1400s you can’t ignore a horse that can land in the first half and get cover. 12. VARAZZE is the little knockout: the claim gets her right down, and barrier six gives her every chance to peel at the right time if the inside chops up late.

1 GRASSBURN (NZ)

In a 1000m, what you do in the first 200 decides everything, and 1. GRASSBURN (NZ) gets his chance to bully an easier race even from the awkward draw. This is a proper class drop: he’s been rubbing shoulders in a Port Macquarie BM74 for $65.5k and even had a crack at a $120k Highway at Wyong, and now he lands in a $27k Class 2 where a lot of these are still learning how to win. That matters. His run at Port Macquarie on a Soft 5 jumps off the page — parked third at the 800 and only collared late by Moscow Circus, beaten under a length. Then at Beaumont on Soft 6 he wasn’t disgraced in a BM66, beaten 2.87 after being right in the fight at the 800 and running home in 35.15 on ground that didn’t suit swoopers. He’s got the Taree tick too, winning his only go at the trip/track. Barrier eight means Ben Looker has to be decisive early. No passengers. But with speed underneath from Magnolia Jewel and Cutting Edge, he can slide over, find cover, and launch at the right time. This is the meeting anchor in any taree form guide. Best of the day.

Dangers & Value

4. MAGNOLIA JEWEL is the one to make you sweat because she draws gate two, owns tactical speed, and her Mornington Soft 5 placing and Port Macquarie win say she can control a 1000m if left alone. 9. RADIO GA GA (NZ) is the fresh horse who can land midfield and get the last crack if they overdo it early. 3. ZEDARI is the map horse from barrier one with the claim available — if the inside is holding up, she’s the type who can pinch a break and take running down.

5 FOXY PRAGUE

The favourite looks vulnerable and that opens the race right up, so I’m happy taking the each-way lane with 5. FOXY PRAGUE from the soft draw. Barrier three is gold here. Gate matters here. John Sprague’s mare has been building a profile of “nearly” without getting the right race shape, and her last two tell you she’ll handle this Soft 7 better than most. At Coffs Harbour on a Heavy 8 over 1212m she held her spot (third at the 800) and fought it out to be beaten just under a length by Blue Dane, clocking a 36.81 last 600 in conditions where plenty simply stopped. That’s a proper wet-track effort. Go back one to Port Macquarie over 1000m on a Good 4 and she was doing her best work late from fifth at the 800 behind Markwell Music — the margin reads 3.32, but she never looked like she was comfortable at the short trip. The 1250m gives her time. The inside gate lets Peter Graham give her a smother instead of chasing. With an even tempo expected and plenty wanting the first half, she only needs clear air at the top of the straight. This is the setup.

Dangers & Value

7. AIRBURST brings the Queensland wet form — third at the Gold Coast on a Heavy 8 after being prominent, and that’s the type of run that translates when the track is testing. 12. LIBERTY CALLS draws to get a cosy run and if she’s within striking distance on the bend she’s the one who can lob into the placings. The query runner is 3. LONGCHAMP LAD: the wide gate means he’ll either go right back or be caught deep, and on this ground that’s a tough way to win, but he can run over the top if they go too hard.

3 JASIRA

There’s no recovery time in a race this short, which is why I’m leaning into the filly who’s already proven she can absorb speed and still fight on in the wet: 3. JASIRA. She keeps running into one better, but the important part is she keeps turning up in stronger maidens than this and holding her form. She chased home Borjnord at Albury in a $50.3k Super Maiden on a Soft 6, leading them up at the 800 and only beaten 0.74. That’s a proper pressure test. She’s also run second in a $50k Super Maiden at Coffs Harbour on Soft 6 and placed as a two-year-old at Mornington on a Heavy 8. Wet track? No issue. She finds the line. She doesn’t shirk it. Barrier 11 is the headache, but this map has no clear leader and a couple of them want to press forward, so Mitchell Bell can ride her like the best horse: punch across, sit outside the speed, and make it a staying 1000. If she hesitates early, she’s cooked. If she begins cleanly, she can put them to the sword. These are the kind of races that shape a set of taree racing tips — you don’t overthink it. She’s the one with the résumé.

Dangers & Value

1. TIGLETTA is the danger with the bigger engine, flashing late at Hawkesbury on Soft 5 when she came from last at the 800 to miss by 0.2, but she can put herself out of the race if she’s too far back again. 7. REDZERO is the map improver from barrier one; if he holds the fence and kicks, he’ll make the others earn it. 5. BONJOUR BILL draws awkwardly but has scope to take a step — he’s a place hope, not a win push for mine.

6 ANYWAYS

Sprint races punish bad starts and reward good gates, and 6. ANYWAYS finally gets the draw to use what she’s been showing in stronger maiden races down south. She’s been runner-up at Bendigo over 1000m when Outer Banks held her out by 0.3, and the key there was she was right on the speed again, travelling like the winner at the 800 before being nailed late. That followed a cracking second at Sapphire Coast over 1100m on a Soft 6, beaten 0.35 after sitting second at the 800 and coping with a brutal 37.4 last 600 — that’s the sort of sectional you see when the track is a grind and the leaders are working. Jason Warren’s filly isn’t a sit-and-sprint type. She rolls. She sustains. On a Soft 7 with a True rail, that style is often the safest way to avoid traffic and avoid the worst of the chopped-up ground. Ms Anna Roper doesn’t need to be cute from gate five. Just step, hold a spot behind the on-pacers, and make her presence felt from the 400. Two goes at the trip for two placings. That’s not an accident. She’s a clean each-way play in this taree form guide.

Dangers & Value

12. SWEET MARLENE is the perennial bridesmaid but she’s drawn to get the softest run of the race from barrier one, and her Port Macquarie second over this trip says she’s right in the finish again. 7. STELLAA LASS has the upside if she gets tempo; she’s the type who can build through her gears when they overcook it early. 9. CHERRY JUBILEE is the wider-gate query runner — she’ll need luck and cover, but if the speed collapses late she can sneak into the minors.

Race 6 Tips — TAB VENUE MODE BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1250m)

8 PARFUMIER

Settling position will sort out half the field before the turn, and 8. PARFUMIER draws to land exactly where she wants from barrier four. She’s not a superstar, but she’s a Taree specialist in the making: she broke through here over 1250m on a Soft 5, leading at the 800 and kicking away to win by just over a length. It wasn’t pretty. It was effective. And it showed she can keep rolling in the wet when others are treading water. Her first try out of that win at Coffs Harbour in a Class 1 on Soft 5 reads ugly — eighth, beaten 5.88 — but I’m prepared to forgive it. She was midfield at the 800 in a race that didn’t look to suit, and the step into that $30k Class 1 after winning a $27k maiden is the kind of jump that finds them out. Back to a $30k BM66, she’s not giving away anywhere near as much. With Vierville and Royal Teens (NZ) likely to ensure it’s genuinely run, she can enjoy a lovely trail and get the first crack when they swing. Soft ground rewards those who travel. She does. This is a winnable one.

Dangers & Value

1. XTRA APPROVAL is the class dropper and the old boy has the track stats to scare you; coming off Canterbury’s $80k level and a BM82 at Grafton into this is a big edge, even with the big weight and needing the claim to bring him right in. 3. VIERVILLE is the map horse who can control the speed if left alone, and you’ll know early if they’ve let him dictate. 2. ISLAND LEGEND is the value runner tucked into barrier three with a light weight after the claim — if the rail is okay by this stage, he can box-seat and steal it.

2 WHAT A RUSH

There’s a horse in this that’s been racing in much stronger company, and the market will try to scare you off because his last start in the $150k MNC Champ was ugly. Ignore it. 2. WHAT A RUSH was thrown into deep water at Port Macquarie, posted three-wide early (third at the 800), and got spat out to finish last, beaten a mile by Show ’Em Howl. That’s not his world. Back to BM66 grade he’s been far more honest. At Port Macquarie two weeks later on a Soft 6 he stuck on for fifth, beaten 2.43 behind Via Vegas after being right there at the 800, and his Taree run on Soft 6 prior was a solid third-at-the-800 effort as well. The margin there looks nasty, but it was one of those races where the winner got away and the rest were chasing. The knock is barrier 12. It’s real. Ms Olivia Dalton has to make a call early: press across and risk burning petrol on a Soft 7, or snag and risk being cluttered up. I’d rather be positive, find the outside of the lead, and grind. He’s proven on soft. He’s tougher than most of these. If he gets any sort of control mid-race, he can take running down.

Dangers & Value

1. CROWIE’S SHOUT is flying and maps better, leading them up at Port Macquarie on Soft 6 and only run down late by Via Vegas; he’s the one who can pinch it if he gets his own way. 3. ROCKBARTON ANGEL is the stalker who can get the right run from gate six and loom as soon as they straighten. 11. TOOMUCHINFORMATION is the blowout: light weight, midfield map, and if the leaders overdo it he’s the one who can sneak into your multiples at odds.

Race 8 Tips — MARK HUBBARD MATE OF THE MONTH BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1600m)

1600mBM58 Handicap

2 CHISTOTA

When the field is this even, small edges decide it, and 2. CHISTOTA brings two of them straight away: wet-track toughness and the ability to control her own race. Ciaron Maher’s mare has made a habit of finding the front or sitting outside it, and she’s done it on soft and heavy ground without flinching. She finally got the maiden win at Port Macquarie on a Soft 7 over 1500m, leading at the 800 and clinging on by a head. Tough win. No panic. Before that she was second at Coffs Harbour on a Heavy 8, again dictating (first at the 800) and only beaten 0.61 by Headstream, and she also ran second at Taree on a Soft 5 over 1312m when Stern Dispute got her late. That’s a key local tie-in. Yes, barrier 11 makes it trickier stepping to the mile. But she’s an on-pacer in a race with no clear leader, and on a Soft 7 you’d rather be rolling than stop-starting in traffic. Ms Mollie Fitzgerald just needs to get her into rhythm, find the right lane, and make them come to her. She’s not a moral. She’s a strong each-way play.

Dangers & Value

3. DEEP DRIVE is the big finisher off that Port Macquarie second over 1509m when he charged from eighth at the 800 to miss by a lip; if they run along, he’s the one you’ll see late. 6. MELATEN is the gate-one runner who can get the run of the race and be the first to pinch runs on the fence if it’s still advantaged. 5. DAMASCUS GATE is the speed influence but the wide draw is ugly; he can be caught doing work early and that’s poison over 1600m in the mud.

Race 9 Tips — XXXX COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1400m)

1400mBM58 Handicap

3 WARBRECCAN

In big fields with mixed pace, where you land matters more than what you are, and 3. WARBRECCAN needs a jockey with a plan from gate 12. He’s coming off the confidence win at Beaumont over 1350m on a Soft 6 where he sat second at the 800 and put them away, beating Erniegy by 1.14. That wasn’t a fluke. He travelled like a horse who’d finally worked it out. Go back to Mornington two starts prior and he was beaten 3.89 over 1000m after being prominent at the 800 — that’s a forgive run for mine because he was asked to sprint sharply at a trip that’s never going to be his best. When he’s allowed to roll into a race at seven furlongs, he’s a different animal. This is a nominal rise into BM58 grade, but the money is similar and the depth isn’t scary. The key is not getting strung up wide early on a Soft 7. If he can slide across midfield with cover and peel at the 400, he’s the one with the strongest recent winning profile. He’s the right way to close the day’s taree racing tips. If you’re hunting for best bets for taree beyond the obvious anchor earlier, he’s the next best win play.

Dangers & Value

8. BE GUIDED is the danger if you forgive the Scone flop; she led them up there and folded badly, but her Dubbo win two starts back says she can sustain pressure when she gets her own way. 13. WHISKERS draws to be in the firing line and can be the one dictating if the pace goes messy. 6. BATTLEDANCE has the wide gate and a tricky map, so she needs everything to go right, but she’s the type who can loom if the leaders are cooked late.

How to play it WARBRECCAN WIN

Best Bets

Best bet is GRASSBURN (NZ) in Race 2 — the class drop into this grade on a Soft 7 is the standout in the taree form guide. Best value runner is FOXY PRAGUE each-way in Race 3, drawn to get the run and proven to fight through the wet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is Race 1 at Taree on Thursday, 09 April 2026?

Race 1 at Taree on Thursday, 09 April 2026 is scheduled for 12:00PM. It’s a 1400m Country Boosted Maiden Handicap, and with a Soft 7 and the rail True, early decisions around cover and settling position will matter from the jump.

What does a Soft 7 track mean for betting at Taree?

A Soft 7 generally means the ground has plenty of give and it’s harder to quicken sharply, especially if you’re forced to cover extra ground. At Taree, that can reward runners who can hold a spot with cover and keep building through the line, rather than those relying on a short, sharp sprint.

What is the best bet at Taree on Thursday, 09 April 2026?

The best bet at Taree on Thursday, 09 April 2026 is Race 2, 1. Grassburn (NZ). He’s dropping sharply in class from stronger prizemoney races into a $27k Class 2, and his recent Port Macquarie second on soft ground reads like the right form for a wet 1000m.

Does the rail position favour leaders at Taree when it’s True?

With the rail in the True, Taree can play fairly, but on a Soft 7 the advantage often swings to horses that can hold a position and avoid covering extra ground. Leaders can be strong if they control the tempo, but the bigger edge is usually getting cover and saving ground before peeling out late.

How should I approach betting on a 9-race card at Taree?

On a Soft 7 card with several races showing genuine tempo, it pays to anchor your staking around the clearest class edge, then play value each-way where maps and wet form align. Keep your quaddie flexible in the maidens, and be wary of wide gates when the track is testing.
