The 2026 Golden Slipper is wide open — and the weather gods are about to have their say. Rosehill Gardens hosts Australia’s richest two-year-old race on Saturday, and with rain forecast through Friday and into Saturday morning, what was already a fascinating betting puzzle just got a whole lot more complicated.
The official field is 16 runners plus 4 emergencies for the $5 million Group 1 over 1200m. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but a softer surface by race time is still realistic. That changes everything — barrier draws, running styles, and wet-track pedigree suddenly matter more than raw talent.
Here’s our complete runner-by-runner breakdown with lead-up form, speed map analysis, pace scenario, and our best bets.
Track & Conditions
Rosehill’s 1200m start puts the field into the bend early, making barrier draws critical. Inside draws have a historical edge — barrier 1 has produced nine Slipper winners since 1983, most recently Fireburn (2022) and Shinzo (2023). But on rain-affected ground, the rail can chew out and wider runners sometimes benefit from cleaner going later in the day.
If the track gets to Heavy, expect leaders and on-pace runners to gain a significant advantage. Getting off the bridle in heavy ground is brutal for two-year-olds still learning their craft, and closers simply can’t generate the same acceleration through churned-up ground.
Speed Map & Pace Scenario
Likely leaders: Paradoxium (18) led all the way in the Todman and is a natural frontrunner — but from barrier 18, Collett will need to burn energy crossing. Closer To Free (17) also has natural gate speed from a wide draw. Both will push forward aggressively.
On-pace/pressing: Warwoven (14) raced second in the Pago Pago and King will adopt similar tactics. Fireball (7) and Campione D’Italia (4) can sit handy from their draws. Pembrey (19) showed speed in the Magic Night if she gains a start.
Midfield: Chayan (12) settled with cover in the Reisling — Williams will look to replicate. Guest House (10), Spicy Miss (5), and Stretan Ruler (13) settle through the middle.
Back markers: Streisand (11) came from behind in the Blue Diamond. Shiki (9) is likely to be ridden quieter.
The key takeaway: With so much natural speed drawn wide — Paradoxium (18), Closer To Free (17), Warwoven (14), and possibly Pembrey (19) if she starts — the early tempo could be fierce. That sets up perfectly for runners drawn inside who can get a soft run in behind the speed. Fireball (7), Campione D’Italia (4), Spicy Miss (5), and Hidrix (1) are the main beneficiaries of this pace shape.
Market Overview
- Chayan ($5.50) — clear favourite after a dominant Reisling win. Opened $6, steady support.
- Streisand ($8.00) — the big mover. Opened $13, crunched into $8. Blue Diamond form is rock solid.
- Guest House ($9.00) — rock steady all week. Consistent Blue Diamond third.
- Warwoven ($9.00) — drifted post-draw (was $7). Pago Pago winner but barrier 14 hurts.
- Closer To Free ($9.50) — firmed from $15. Smart money since barriers.
- Paradoxium ($10.00) — was $5 pre-draw. Todman winner but barrier 18 is brutal.
- Spicy Miss ($11.00) — was $6 co-favourite. Major drift = red flag.
- Incognito ($41.00) — was $8. The biggest drifter.
- Medicinal ($26.00) — was $126. The mystery firmer among the emergencies.
Historical note: Favourites have won just 5 Golden Slippers in 30 years, and only one in the last decade. But 13 of the past 16 winners started at $8.50 or shorter — the winner usually comes from the front of the market, just rarely the favourite itself.
Runner-by-Runner Analysis
1. HIDRIX (1) — $26.00
Barrier: 1 · Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy · Trainer: Chris Waller · Style: On-pace
The outsider of Waller’s three runners. McDonald is on Fireball, Lane is on Campione D’Italia, and McEvoy gets this one, which gives you a fair guide to the stable pecking order. Firmed from $41 to $26 showing quiet support.
The asset is obvious: barrier 1. Nine Slipper winners from gate 1 since 1983. On a heavy track with potential inside bias, getting the rail from jump to finish is enormous. McEvoy won’t panic — he’ll find the fence and stay there.
Verdict: Roughie with the dream draw. Exotics if the track gets heavy.
4. CAMPIONE D’ITALIA (4) — $18.00 ⭐
Barrier: 4 · Jockey: Damian Lane · Trainer: Chris Waller · Style: Midfield/on-pace
Lead-up: Won the Skyline Stakes (G2, Feb 28) at upset odds, beating $1.80 favourite Warwoven into fourth. Warwoven has since come out and won the Pago Pago and is $9 for this race — so the Skyline form franks beautifully.
Lane is one of the sharpest big-race riders in Australia and his record in feature races is outstanding. Barrier 4 is ideal on a wet Rosehill track — inside, saves ground, gets cover behind the speed, and can pounce when the wide-drawn runners tire in the straight.
Drifted from $15 to $18, which is the only negative. But the jockey booking and the draw combination at $18 each-way is hard to resist.
Verdict: Each-way at $18. Jockey + draw = serious contender.
5. SPICY MISS (5) — $11.00
Barrier: 5 · Jockey: C Newitt · Trainer: Ciaron Maher · Style: Midfield
Lead-up: Won the Sweet Embrace Stakes (G2, Feb 28). Barrier 5 is ideal and Maher is elite with juveniles. The drift from $6 to $11 is the obvious knock, but from a pure map perspective she still gets one of the better setups in the race.
Verdict: Strong setup, but the market drift is the concern. Include in wider chances.
6. ZAMBALES (6) — $17.00
Barrier: 6 · Jockey: Nash Rawiller · Trainer: Anthony & Sam Freedman · Style: On-pace/midfield
Firmed from $21 into $17. Rawiller is proven in big races and the Freedman stable doesn’t enter $5 million races without genuine belief. Barrier 6 allows a soft run in behind the speed.
Verdict: Sneaky each-way chance at the price.
7. FIREBALL (7) — $16.00 ⭐
Barrier: 7 · Jockey: James McDonald · Trainer: Chris Waller · Style: On-pace
Barrier 7 sets up perfectly for the pace scenario. With all the speed drawn wide (Paradoxium 18, Closer To Free 17, Warwoven 14), Fireball can sit in behind them from the ideal gate, save energy while they burn it crossing, and give McDonald every chance to produce him at the right time.
At $16, a McDonald/Waller combination in a Group 1 is naturally going to attract interest.
Verdict: J-Mac, barrier 7, ideal run expected. Big price. Yes.
8. MUSIC TIME (8) — $34.00
Barrier: 8 · Jockey: P Boudvillain · Trainer: G Vella · Style: Midfield
Lead-up: Won the Black Opal Stakes (Canberra). Paid the $150k late entry fee. But has blown from $15 to $34 — the market doesn’t think the Canberra form measures up.
Verdict: Drifting for a reason. Pass.
9. SHIKI (9) — $81.00
Barrier: 9 · Jockey: Regan Bayliss · Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott · Style: Back
Drifted from $26 to $81. Market dismissal.
Verdict: Hard to make a case.
10. GUEST HOUSE (10) — $9.00
Barrier: 10 · Jockey: Zac Lloyd · Trainer: Michael Price & Michael Jnr · Style: Midfield
Lead-up: 3rd Blue Diamond Stakes (G1, Feb 22) behind Streisand and Closer To Free. Blue Diamond form is strong — Lady Of Camelot won the 2024 Slipper off a Blue Diamond second using the same 28-day gap between runs.
Rock-solid at $9 all week. That price stability in a volatile market shows genuine, consistent support. Barrier 10 allows a midfield run with cover. Lloyd, while talented, isn’t in the McDonald/Lane/Williams tier — that’s the main knock.
Verdict: Genuine contender. Include in exotics.
11. STREISAND (11) — $8.00 ⭐⭐
Barrier: 11 · Jockey: Ben Melham · Trainer: Clinton McDonald · Style: Midfield/back
Lead-up: Won the Blue Diamond Stakes (G1) — beating the boys as a filly. Clinton McDonald’s stable is in excellent form. Has had the 28-day Blue Diamond to Slipper gap, which mirrors Lady Of Camelot’s winning 2024 prep pattern.
The most significant market plunge in the field — opened $13, crunched into $8 with relentless support all week. Fillies have won 6 of the last 9 Slippers. A Group 1-winning filly from Melbourne into the Slipper fits a strong historical profile.
Barrier 11 means settling midfield to back. On a genuinely Heavy track, closers face a tougher task — but if it’s Soft 5-7, she has the class to run over the top of them.
Verdict: Our best bet. The plunge, the filly factor, the G1 form, the prep pattern — it all stacks up.
12. CHAYAN (12) — $5.50
Barrier: 12 · Jockey: Craig Williams · Trainer: Annabel & Rob Archibald · Style: Midfield with cover
Lead-up: Stakes placing on debut → 7th Blue Diamond (wide throughout, bad luck) → 1st Reisling Stakes (G2, Mar 7) by three lengths. The Reisling was dominant and clearly stamped her as the one to beat on exposed Sydney form.
Deservedly favourite. The Reisling has produced 5 Slipper winners since 2009. Williams is one of the most experienced big-race riders in Australia.
But barrier 12 is still awkward if the track gets wet and it becomes hard to make ground from midfield or worse.
Verdict: Best form in the race but $5.50 is short enough from the draw on a rain-affected track. Use in exotics.
13. STRETAN RULER (13) — $17.00
Barrier: 13 · Jockey: Chad Schofield · Trainer: Peter Stokes · Style: On-pace/midfield
Lead-up: Won the Silver Slipper Stakes (G2) impressively, then ran 2nd in the Todman Stakes beaten 1.43L by Paradoxium. Solid form but drifted from $12 to $17.
Verdict: Respect the form, but the market has cooled. More exotics than win play.
14. WARWOVEN (14) — $9.00
Barrier: 14 · Jockey: Rachel King · Trainer: Bjorn Baker · Style: On-pace (pressing)
Lead-up: Missed Magic Millions → 4th Skyline Stakes as $1.80 favourite (weakened late, likely underdone first-up) → 1st Pago Pago Stakes (G3, Mar 15) seven days later, racing second and winning by a length. The Pago Pago bounce was visually impressive.
But barrier 14 on a wet Rosehill track is a serious negative. Will burn energy crossing against a quality field and is also backing up seven days after the Pago Pago.
Verdict: Enormous talent but the draw is the dealbreaker if the track deteriorates.
16. INCOGNITO (16) — $41.00
Barrier: 16 · Jockey: Tommy Berry · Trainer: Michael Freedman
Was $8. Now $41. Big drift. Despite Berry in the saddle, the market has completely lost interest.
Verdict: Very hard to have.
17. CLOSER TO FREE (17) — $9.50
Barrier: 17 · Jockey: Jamie Melham · Trainer: Danny O’Brien · Style: On-pace
Lead-up: 2nd Blue Diamond Stakes (G1) behind Streisand. Paid the $150k late entry fee — serious confidence from connections. Firmed from $15 to $9.50.
The Blue Diamond second is a strong form line and the natural gate speed helps from the wide draw. But barrier 17 at Rosehill in wet ground is genuinely awful. Crossing from there burns enormous energy.
Verdict: Strong form, crippling draw.
18. PARADOXIUM (18) — $10.00
Barrier: 18 · Jockey: Jason Collett · Trainer: Bjorn Baker · Style: Leader
Lead-up: Won the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic by 3L, then returned to win the Todman Stakes (G2, Mar 7), leading all the way and beating Stretan Ruler by 1.43L first-up. The talent is obvious and the Todman is a proper Slipper lead-up.
But barrier 18 on a tight Rosehill track in wet ground makes leading almost impossible without burning up. Was $5 pre-draw, now $10 — the market has adjusted accordingly.
Verdict: Enormous talent. Terrible draw. If drawn inside 8, he’d be much shorter.
Emergencies
15. MEDICINAL (15) — $26.00 (Emergency)
Trainer: B, W & J Hayes
The mystery firmer. Opened $126 and has tightened sharply. Worth monitoring if she gains a run and secures a notable rider.
Verdict: Intriguing if she gets in.
19. PEMBREY (19) — $21.00 (Emergency)
Trainer: Tony Gollan · Style: On-pace
Lead-up: Won the Magic Night Stakes (G3, Mar 15). Paid the $150k late entry fee. But barrier 19, rider uncertainty and a seven-day back-up make life difficult.
Verdict: Needs luck to get in and then plenty to go right.
20. AGRARIAN GIRL (20) — $41.00 (Emergency)
Jockey: Tim Clark · Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott
Lead-up: Won on debut impressively, then ran 2nd in the Reisling behind Chayan. A capable filly, but the barrier is ugly if she gets a start.
Verdict: Some talent, tough setup.
2. GIN TWIST (2) — $81.00 (Emergency)
Trainer: B, W & J Hayes
Would need to gain a run first and then improve sharply.
Verdict: Hard to make a case.
3. SCREEN ICON (3) — $151.00 (Emergency)
Trainer: J Thompson
Rank outsider and not a realistic winning hope even if gaining a run.
Verdict: No.
Best Bets
STREISAND — Each-Way @ $8.00
Blue Diamond winner — proved she’s the best juvenile filly in Melbourne by beating the boys at Group 1 level. The $13 to $8 plunge all week is impossible to ignore. Fillies have won 6 of the last 9 Slippers. The prep pattern also lines up strongly.
Lead-up: 1st Blue Diamond (G1)
Draw: 11 — midfield, workable
Wet track: Untested but respected by the market
FIREBALL — Each-Way @ $16.00
Barrier 7 is ideal for the expected race shape. With the main speed drawn wider, Fireball can get the right run while others burn energy crossing.
Lead-up: Progressive profile
Draw: 7 — ideal behind pace
Setup: One of the map horses
CAMPIONE D’ITALIA — Each-Way @ $18.00
Skyline form reads well enough, the draw is ideal, and Damian Lane is exactly the rider you want in a race where saving ground matters.
Lead-up: 1st Skyline Stakes (G2)
Draw: 4 — perfect wet-track gate
Wet track: Draw compensates if rain arrives
The Card
Best Bet: STREISAND each-way @ $8.00 — Blue Diamond winner, filly factor, enormous market plunge.
Value: FIREBALL each-way @ $16.00 — J-Mac, barrier 7, ideal setup.
Roughie: CAMPIONE D’ITALIA each-way @ $18.00 — Skyline form, Lane aboard, barrier 4.
The danger: CHAYAN ($5.50) — best exposed form in the race but short enough from barrier 12 if conditions worsen.
Against: PARADOXIUM ($10.00) and WARWOVEN ($9.00) — hugely talented but drawn 18 and 14. On wet Rosehill, those barriers are brutal.
